The oldest gold in the world

In Varna was found the oldest processed gold treasure in the world, which overturns the ideas of historians about the development of human civilization.

It was discovered accidentally in 1972 during construction works in Varna, about 4 km away from the current city center. 294 graves were found, more than 3 000 gold objects of almost 23.5 pure perfect gold, with a total weight of over 6 kg.

The Varna Gold Treasure is considered the oldest gold treasure in the world or the oldest human processed gold in the world dating back to the time of the Chalcolithic (Aeneolithic, Copper Age) called Varna Culture – 5,000-4,400 BC.

The treasure, as well as many more from the ancient history of the city, you can see in the Varna Archaeological Museum.

The opening time during the summer season June - September is every day from 10:00h till 17:00h.
